DRY ROT

Dealing With Dry Rot

Dry Rot is the most damaging type of fungal decay found in properties. It can affect almost any surface or item and if left untreated can spread aggressively, leading to structural instability, so it is important to commence treatment as quickly as possible.

If you think you may have an outbreak of dry rot, contact us without delay to arrange an inspection by one of our surveyors, who are experts in the identification and treatment of fungal decay.

WHY DOES DRY ROT OCCUR?

DRY ROT FUNGUS (Serpula lacrymans) is often triggered when severe moisture from sources such as leaks or water ingress begins to dry out.

If problem is identified in its early stages and the moisture source which triggered it eliminated, our professional treatments can often save affected items. However, it is common for an attack to be well established before it is noticed, which may require the replacement of timbers and wall plaster in addition to biocide treatment.

HOW TO SPOT DRY ROT?

There are many different signs of dry rot, which can vary greatly in appearance - so if you see any of the following in your property you should arrange for a specialist inspection without delay:-
  • Musty, fungal odour.
  • Crumbling/damaged timber items.
  • Grey/white strands on timber, often described as looking like cobwebs.
  • Orange/red spore dust, similar in appearance to brick dust.
  • Mycelium growth, with a cotton wool/cloud like appearance
  • Fruiting body (sporophore), fungal growths which can appear in many shapes and sizes but can be identified by their deep orange/red centre with lighter edges.
