Wet Rot Treatment

Wet rot fungus (Coniophora puteana) only affects timber and is generally less destructive than dry rot. However, it is the most common form of fungal decay in buildings and can still cause serious structural damage if left untreated.

While chemical treatment can often resolve the issue, early detection is crucial — the longer it remains undetected, the more costly and disruptive it can become.

What Causes Wet Rot?

Wet rot typically develops in timber exposed to leaks, water ingress, or direct contact with damp surfaces. This increases the wood's moisture content, creating ideal conditions for fungal spores to germinate and grow, feeding on the wood and breaking down its structure. This process results in timber decay, which can lead to structural weakening if not dealt with correctly.

Spot The Rot!

Wet rot often develops in hidden areas such as beneath floor coverings or roofing insulation, which can delay diagnosis. However, there are clear warning signs to look out for, such as:

  • Softened, spongy, brittle or cracking timber

  • Darkened or discoloured wood compared to surrounding areas

  • Excessive movement or ‘bounce’ in floorboards

  • Flaking or blistering paint/varnish on skirting boards, window frames, etc.

  • Musty or damp smell

  • Visible fungal growth near moisture sources

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to act quickly. Contact PRESERVA for a professional wet rot assessment without delay.
