Woodworm Treatment & Timber Protection

Woodworm is the collective term for a variety of wood-boring insects, specifically the larvae that tunnel through timber as they feed. Despite the name, woodworm is not actually a worm, it refers to beetles and weevils that can cause serious damage if left untreated.

At PRESERVA, we specialise in diagnosing and treating woodworm infestations, preserving the safety and strength of your structural timber.

Woodworm Treatment Methods

In many cases, PRESERVA can identify and treat woodworm infestation before significant damage occurs, using safe and environmentally friendly deep-penetrating insecticides in spray or paste form. However, in cases where the infestation has gone undetected for some time, the structural integrity of the timber may be compromised, so the best solution may be to cut out and replace or strengthen the effected items using resin repair techniques to restore stability and safety.

Understanding Woodworm and How It Spreads

Woodworm larvae can live within timber for up to five years, during which time they can cause extensive damage as they grow. Once mature, they pupate and emerge from the timber as adult beetles, leaving behind the distinctive emergence holes that are for most people the first sign of an infestation. After mating, female beetles lay eggs in nearby timber, allowing the infestation to spread quickly throughout a property, with this cycle repeating until professionally treated.

In addition to the tell-tale holes (which may vary in shape and size depending on the insect species), property owners and occupiers may notice signs such as sawdust-like residue on or around affected timber, crumbling or weakened timber and even the presence of adult beetles at certain times of the year.
